Cou­ple in court for forc­ing girl to train

BLOEM­FONTEIN — The mother and step­fa­ther of a 10­year­old girl ap­peared in court yes­ter­day charged with at­tempted mur­der and child ne­glect for al­legedly forc­ing her to ex­er­cise be­yond the point of ex­haus­tion.

The at­tempted mur­der charge re­lates to an in­ci­dent in Oc­to­ber last year when the girl al­legedly had to swim con­tin­u­ously in the Kruger­drift Dam, out­side Bloem­fontein, while her par­ents watched from the side.

When the girl was tired of swim­ming, she was al­legedly as­saulted and forced to swim again.

The child, who is de­scribed as a sports star and as do­ing well in school, is now in fos­ter care.

The case against the 38­year­old mother and her hus­band (31) was yes­ter­day post­poned in the Bloem­fontein Re­gional Court as the in­ves­ti­ga­tion docket had yet to be fi­nalised. The case was post­poned to Jan­uary 17.
