LG’s G2 a serious competitor

EARLIER this week LG held the Durban leg of the G2 smartphone launch at the Oyster Box.

LG was never seen to be one of the leading market competitors in smartphone development, but that has since changed with the launch of the G2.

Stacking up against major rivals from Apple and Samsung, the LG G2 holds its weight.

The device has a far more unique design than devices such as the iPhone and S4.

In the standard design of today’s slateshaped smartphones, volume buttons and other keys are situated on the side of the device.

LG recognised that while a user is making a call, the index finger is normally placed on the centre of the back of the device. In this they have opted to place volume and camera buttons on the back of the device under the camera.

This means while engaged in a call, it is easier for the user to adjust the volume and taking a “selfie” is far easier as a result of having the capture button on the back end of the device.

In all fairness having these buttons on the rear of the device is convenient, but LG could have gone one step further by making the rear button an optical mouse, which could make scrolling web pages easier, and the device itself more functional.

On the facing side on the device, the buttons controlling navigation and other keys were removed to optimise the size of the screen, making it a few inches bigger. The device has one of the biggest displays on a smartphone that edges on being a tablet at a size of 5,2 inches, with a True HD IPS display as opposed to the Super Amoled display on most other devices.

The G2 also has a 13megapixel rear camera and a 2,1 facing with 16gigabyte onboard memory and option for sharing information, while running the Android Jelly Bean firmware.

For its uniqueness and ability to hold the attention of its user, the device gets an eight out of 10. • Let me know what you think @Kyle Venktess on Twitter. • kyle.venktess @witness.co.za
