The AMAs focus on commercial success, with fans voting for their favourites, in c ontrast to the older Gr ammy Awards in which music industry professionals select what they consider to be the y ear’s t op work.

Swift received a new award for excellence named in honour of the AMA ’s late f ounder, Dick Clar k, a pioneer of music television performances with his American Bandstand sho w.

Accepting the a ward fr om Motown legend Diana R oss, Swift said: “W hat you did b y going out and in vesting in music and albums is you’re saying that you believe in the same thing that I believe in — that music is v aluable and that music should be c onsumed in albums, and albums should be consumed as art and appr eciated.”

Swift’s lat est album, 1989, enjo yed the highest sales of any American album in its first week in 12 y ears. It f ar outpaced industry expectations by selling two million copies in the United States in it s fir st thr ee weeks.

After the album came out, S wift pulled her entire catalogue from Spotify, accusing the streaming service of devaluing music by not paying enough to artists.

Swift opened the e vening b y performing the album’s latest single Blank Space, in which she held a burning rose as she pushed back suitors who pranced around her holding open pictur e frames.

Hiphop bad boy Lil Wayne also took to the stage in a passionate dance with actress and singer Christina Milian, his rumoured gir lfriend.

They perf ormed Start a Fir e, with ABC television editing out some lyrics from the broadcast. The track is expected to be on Lil W ayne’s upcoming album Tha Carter V, which is scheduled for r elease on Dec ember 9.
