Concrete block from truck kills woman
A WOMAN was killed in a horror Field’s Hill truck smash yesterday, the latest in a string of accidents on the busy arterial route to Durban.
The car the 8 3yearold w as travelling in was crushed by a precast c oncrete block, w hich had been carried as cargo on the truck that o verturned.
ER24 spok esperson R ussel Meiring said the car was crushed beneath the eightt on c oncrete block. “P aramedics f ound the road blocked by a large truck that lay on its side. A light motor vehicle lay crushed beneath the truck and crane attachment. On assessment, paramedics found that an elderly woman lay trapped within her vehicle and sadly she had already succumbed to her injuries,” he said.
The M13 Field’s Hill r oute restricts access to trucks at times.
Restrictions s tate truck s with a carrying capacity of 16 tons to 25 tons are forbidden to use the M13 fr om 6 am t o 9 am in the morning on the eas tbound carriageway, and fr om Hillcr est t o Pinetown bet ween 4 pm and 6.30 pm in both dir ections.
Hillcrest ward councillor Rick Crouch said ther e w as not enough enforcement in the area.
“Trucks can dodge police and go around them because they do not s tation themsel ves at all of the access points to the road,” he said.
Crouch said that r estrictions were not adequat e.
“I have asked the MEC t o restrict all truck s fr om using this route; h owever, h e r efuses and this death c ould have been pr evented if he ensured this,” he said.
Truck o wner N olan Chet ty said the truck w as on it s way to make a delivery to Pinetown from Pietermaritzburg.
“We aren’t sure why the truck overturned, but the truck had juts had it s br akes and alignment done last week and is serviced every 10 000 kilometres,” he said. • je email@example.com • firstname.lastname@example.org
