Con­crete block from truck kills woman

A WOMAN was killed in a hor­ror Field’s Hill truck smash yes­ter­day, the lat­est in a string of ac­ci­dents on the busy ar­te­rial route to Dur­ban.

The car the 8 3­year­old w as trav­el­ling in was crushed by a pre­cast c on­crete block, w hich had been car­ried as cargo on the truck that o ver­turned.

ER24 spok es­per­son R us­sel Meir­ing said the car was crushed be­neath the eight­t on c on­crete block. “P aramedics f ound the road blocked by a large truck that lay on its side. A light mo­tor ve­hi­cle lay crushed be­neath the truck and crane at­tach­ment. On as­sess­ment, paramedics found that an el­derly woman lay trapped within her ve­hi­cle and sadly she had al­ready suc­cumbed to her in­juries,” he said.

The M13 Field’s Hill r oute re­stricts ac­cess to trucks at times.

Re­stric­tions s tate truck s with a car­ry­ing ca­pac­ity of 16 tons to 25 tons are for­bid­den to use the M13 fr om 6 am t o 9 am in the morn­ing on the eas tbound car­riage­way, and fr om Hillcr est t o Pine­town bet ween 4 pm and 6.30 pm in both dir ec­tions.

Hill­crest ward coun­cil­lor Rick Crouch said ther e w as not enough en­force­ment in the area.

“Trucks can dodge po­lice and go around them be­cause they do not s tation them­sel ves at all of the ac­cess points to the road,” he said.

Crouch said that r es­tric­tions were not ad­e­quat e.

“I have asked the MEC t o re­strict all truck s fr om us­ing this route; h ow­ever, h e r efuses and this death c ould have been pr evented if he en­sured this,” he said.

Truck o wner N olan Chet ty said the truck w as on it s way to make a de­liv­ery to Pine­town from Pi­eter­mar­itzburg.
