About 70% of patients rely on an unrelated bone-marrow donor. As the SA Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR) has a partnership with international registries, most of these matches for patients are found abroad. This is because SABMR only has 73 000 registered donors, whereas Germany has 7,5 million, for example. Carey was only the 43rd unrelated donor used for transplant in SA. Matches are also usually found within the patient’s ethnic group and, because only 17% of SA’S registered donors are black or coloured, more donors from these ethnic groups are urgently needed. Almost any healthy person aged 18 to 45 can be a donor. E-mail donors@sabmr. co.za or call the SABMR on 021 447 8638.
