Many of us are driven by oc­ca­sion-based goals. Maybe a beach hol­i­day is on the cards. Or a close friend’s wed­ding. So you crank things up at the gym and get dra­co­nian with your diet (back off, carbs). It’s bru­tal. But it of­ten works. The event hits, you slay in your back­less dress and then dial down the in­ten­sity. But that yo-yoing messes with your body phys­i­cally (your me­tab­o­lism, strength, en­durance) – and men­tally, says psy­chol­o­gist Dr Alexis Cona­son. “If you can’t keep it up, you of­ten blame your­self for not ‘be­ing good enough’ – which can prompt women to give up working out com­pletely.” Well, that’s about to change.
