TRIATHLON

Women's Health (South Africa) - - STRENGTH & CONDITIONING -

WHAT IT IS: One race in which you swim, cycle and run. To prep for it, you need to be strong in each of those disciplines. Gina and Michelle did indoor triathlon training, using the pool, wattbikes and treadmills. “Sitting on a bike for half an hour was a special kind of torture. I really love the thrill and adrenaline rush of a HIIT workout and I need workouts that keep me guessing. Sometimes trying something new lets you know that what you’ve been doing all along is working.” MICHELLE OCTOBER (right), 26, junior writer “Triathlons aren’t for the faint-hearted. You need to prepare yourself mentally for the amount of cardio that you have to put your body through... It’s a lot. This challenge has definitely reignited my passion for fitness. I’ve since discovered that I can actually swim and I’ll probably incorporate swimming into my workout routine going forward. My cardio fitness improved a lot. I’ve noticed that my legs are a lot leaner and I can see a hint of a six-pack. I’m also capable of exerting myself for longer periods of time without feeling like I’m out of breath.” – GINA BERETTA (far right), 33, digital editor
