JUNE Bates, from Johannesburg, got quite a shock 13 years ago when her doc­tor warned her she was on the verge of de­vel­op­ing diabetes.

“I quickly de­cided to take con­trol of my weight and high blood pres­sure,” June says. She joined the na­tion­wide pro­gramme Run/walk For Life walk­ing 4 km about three times a week. “I started en­joy­ing walk­ing so much, it felt like I was ad­dicted. I started feel­ing fit­ter and not as slug­gish as be­fore,” she says.

Now June laughs when she re­mem­bers all she could man­age back then was 4 km – she’s done the 21 km Two Oceans Half Marathon twice and is plan­ning a 10-day, 256 km walk in the Ka­roo with her walk­ing bud­dies next year.
