WHAT HAPPENS IN AN EMERGENCY?

YOU Gateway to Space - - Liftoff! -

An emergency on board may be either a fire or an explosion. B If it happens at liftoff, the crew can escape in a small rocket called an escape tower which “grabs” the crew section and descends to the ground. This is called the launch escape system. It only works up to an altitude of 40 km. If not used it drops off and lands in an isolated area. B If an emergency happens in the second stage, the spacecraft can separate from the rocket, deploy parachutes and land on the ground.
