HE WAS hand-picked by Jon Stewart to take over the hot seat – but America wasn’t amused when the unknown comedian from South Africa was announced as the stalwart’s successor on The Daily Show in 2015.

“Who on earth is this guy?” was the general feeling among viewers of the popular talk show when our Trevor Noah took the reins.

“He’s not funny,” critics complained.

But fast-forward two years and they’re singing a different tune. The Soweto-born comedian ( 33) used his sharp wit and keen sense of humour to win America over.

He cinched the GLAAD Media Award for outstanding talk show, and beat beloved talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres to win the best host trophy at the recent MTV Movie & TV Awards show.

Trevor is over the moon about his MTV award. “I used to watch the MTV awards as a kid,” he wrote on Instagram. “This is a dream I never dared to dream.”

In an emotional speech an unusually solemn Trevor dedicated the award to his mother, Patricia Nombuyiselo Noah. “She’s a powerful, strong black woman who didn’t listen when they told her she couldn’t be more.”

But of course he couldn’t leave the stage without cracking a joke. “Thank you to Donald J Trump for the comedy,” he added with his cheeky dimpled grin.

Trevor took to social media with another wisecrack after the show, sharing a snap of himself and rapper Snoop Dogg on Instagram with the caption: “PS: Find you someone who looks at you the way Snoop looked at me after I won.”

It seems as if this is his year. In February he won two NAACP Image awards for his memoir, Born A Crime, which spent weeks on the New York Times list of bestselling nonfiction. The same month his comedy show Trevor Noah: Afraid Of The Dark was released on internet streaming service Netflix. In February this year alone, The Daily Show had more than 1,5 million viewers – the highest number since he took over from Jon Stewart in September 2015.

Thanks to his success Trevor is living a jetsetter lifestyle. He’s a regular on the red carpet and is a multimillionaire. We take a look at how his fabulous life is #sohotrightnow.
