1 The 24-year-old is blowing up the charts with her breakthrough single, Bodak Yellow (Money Moves), which the New York Times has called the rap anthem of the summer. 2 “I wanted to do a song that’s like, ‘You know what? I’m in a good place in my life right now and I want to stunt [show off]’.” And stunt she did – the track went to No 1 on the Billboard Hot Rap chart. 3 Born Belcalis Almanzar to a Trinidadian mother and Dominican father, she grew up in New York. She started out as a stripper then became an Instagram sensation thanks to her “no filter attitude”. In 2015 she was cast in the VH1 reality series Love & Hip Hop: New York. 4 At the 2017 BET Awards she was nominated for best new artist and best female hip-hop artist, but didn’t win in either category. 5 She cites Missy Elliot, Madonna, Lady Gaga and Puerto Rican rapper Ivy Queen among her inspirations. 6 She says the downside of fame is being surrounded by fake people. “When I was broke, I never really had anybody. Now I have so many people who support me. Do people like me ‘cause of me? Or do they just like Cardi B?”
