Best known for her dramatic work, Union takes on a new challenge playing a mom who channels her inner action heroine when her kids’ lives are threatened.
After her father’s murder, Shaun Russell (Union) and her children (Seth Carr and 13 Reasons Why’s Ajiona Alexus) travel to his secluded forest home to prepare to sell it. Secrets unfold as they explore the house’s impenetrable security system, but all hell breaks loose when four robbers (including two played by Burke and Cabral) arrive, take the kids hostage and demand whatever Shaun’s father was hiding in the house.
The Being Mary Jane star is also an executive producer of the movie, a role she took because, she says, “I’d rather bet on myself and have a bit more control than put my life in somebody else’s hands, especially with the genre I want to get into.”
Her long-time producer Will Packer says he’s proud Union is steering her own career at a time when – after 20 years – others would be flailing. Packer also produced Girls Trip (2017) and hopes he can show off Union’s comedic chops next.
“Gab is so funny,” he told Complex.com. “That’s what people don’t know. Sometimes it’ll come across in her social media, but she doesn’t really play those roles. She can go dark but so funny.”
