The actor, writer, director and producer became the 46th recipient of the American Film Institute’s lifetime achievement award at a gala dinner at Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre
George and Amal looked on as his dad, broadcast journalist Nick Clooney, introduced the two-time Oscar winner as “a man of the movies and a citizen of the world”.
The award was supposed to be presented by long-time pal Julia Roberts but due to a scheduling conflict she couldn’t make it. Actress Shirley MacLaine, who received the AFI honour in 2012, stepped in, joking, “I’m the one who goes on when the star has a problem.”
1 Actress Anna Kendrick, in an asymmetrical Ralph & Russo dress, was on hand to help honour her Up in the Air co-star. 2 George’s ER co-star Julianna Margulies also joined in the celebrations. 3 Friends stars Courteney Cox and Jennifer Aniston joked the only reason George’s career took off was because fans who tuned in to watch their hit sitcom back in the day were too lazy to change the channel when ER came on. 4 Just Getting Started actress Jane Seymour looked half her age in a figure-hugging Jovani dress. 5 Businessman Rande Gerber – a close friend of George’s – with his wife, supermodel Cindy Crawford, who was radiant in white. After cofounding tequila brand Casamigos in 2013, George and Rande sold it to European beverage company Diageo for $1 billion (then R12,5 billion) last year. 6 Oscar winner Cate Blanchett, who worked with George in The Good German and The Monuments Men, looked edgy in a fauxtattoo-sleeved number by Yacine Aouadi.
