All about coal

It might look like a rather grubby lump of rock but this hum­ble sub­stance fu­els South Africa’s econ­omy in more ways than you might think

DI­A­MONDS and gold aren't South Africa’s only pre­cious com­modi­ties. In fact, coal is more im­por­tant to the econ­omy than gold. Coal min­ing is one of the coun­try’s most im­por­tant in­dus­tries – SA gen­er­ates most of its elec­tric­ity by burn­ing coal and many peo­ple are em­ployed in min­ing it. Many of us also use coal to get the fire started for a braai!

Un­like di­a­monds and gold, which are min­er­als made from in­or­ganic ma­te­rial, coal con­sists of plant ma­te­rial that’s gone through many changes. Let’s find out about this process.
