Five years after we last heard from the Canadian pop star Avril Lavigne (34) is back with a new track called Head above Water, a dramatic ballad that speaks about her battle with Lyme disease.
The singer was diagnosed with the tickborne disease – which left her bedridden for five months and barely able to walk – in 2015.
In a recent letter to fans posted on her website, Avril says she wrote Head above Water after “one of the scariest moments of my life where I’d accepted death and could feel my body shutting down”. She likens the experience to drowning.
The songbird has promised fans her long-awaited sixth album will drop this year, but no name or date has been announced yet.
