THE VOICE BEHIND THE MOUSE
Mickey was first voiced by none other than Walt Disney himself.
But by the late ’40s running his evergrowing company was taking up most of Walt’s time – and his smoking habit was doing Mickey’s famously high-pitched voice no favours. So musician and actor Jimmy MacDonald stepped up to the microphone.
Jimmy, who voiced Mickey until his retirement in 1977, could do incredible things with his voice – like all the yodelling in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the hyena’s yowls in Bedknobs and Broomsticks and even tiger Shere Khan’s roars in The Jungle Book.
Mickey’s next long-time voice was courtesy of Wayne Allwine – who married Russi Taylor, the actress who did Minnie’s voice.
Wayne was Mickey for 32 years, until his death in 2009 at age 62.
Bret Iwan (36), a former Hallmark greeting card writer, is Mickey’s current voice.
