First fe­male Speaker

IN a first for the City of uMh­lathuze, a woman has been elected as Speaker.

Coun­sel­lor Slondile Mkhize was elected dur­ing a spe­cial Coun­cil meet­ing on Fri­day.

The po­si­tion was va­cated by the un­timely pass­ing of for­mer Speaker Mfundo Mthen­jana in Fe­bru­ary.

Coun­cil reshuf­fled the top lead­er­ship struc­ture by re­leas­ing Mkhize from her pre­vi­ous po­si­tion of Deputy Mayor and re­plac­ing her with Coun­sel­lor Duduzile Sibiya.

Sibiya was an Ex­ec­u­tive Coun­cil (Exco) mem­ber head­ing the Water and San­i­ta­tion Port­fo­lio Com­mit­tee and was nom­i­nated un­op­posed by the full coun­cil.

Ac­cept­ing her nom­i­na­tion, Mkhize ap­pre­ci­ated the con­fi­dence in her as a woman leader.

‘I know that it was not only my political party coun­cil­lors who nom­i­nated me, but all coun­cil­lors.’

Coun­cil­lor Du­misani Ndi­mande was elected to the Exco po­si­tion and re­signed from his pre­vi­ous po­si­tion as the Chair­per­son of the Mu­nic­i­pal Pub­lic Ac­counts Com­mit­tee (MPAC).

Coun­cil­lor Then­jiwe Mbatha was elected to serve on the King Cetshwayo District Mu­nic­i­pal­ity to fill the va­cancy af­ter the pass­ing of Cllr Mthen­jana.
