First female Speaker
IN a first for the City of uMhlathuze, a woman has been elected as Speaker.
Counsellor Slondile Mkhize was elected during a special Council meeting on Friday.
The position was vacated by the untimely passing of former Speaker Mfundo Mthenjana in February.
Council reshuffled the top leadership structure by releasing Mkhize from her previous position of Deputy Mayor and replacing her with Counsellor Duduzile Sibiya.
Sibiya was an Executive Council (Exco) member heading the Water and Sanitation Portfolio Committee and was nominated unopposed by the full council.
Accepting her nomination, Mkhize appreciated the confidence in her as a woman leader.
‘I know that it was not only my political party councillors who nominated me, but all councillors.’
Councillor Dumisani Ndimande was elected to the Exco position and resigned from his previous position as the Chairperson of the Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC).
Councillor Thenjiwe Mbatha was elected to serve on the King Cetshwayo District Municipality to fill the vacancy after the passing of Cllr Mthenjana.
