Michaela has bags full of talent
EMPANGENI High School learner Michaela Smith has been selected as the April winner of the Supersport Let’s Play competition.
She rolled her way into the U15 KZN lawn bowls team and bagged a bronze medal at the inter-provincial tournament held in Bloemfontein last month.
The 13-year-old took up bowls after spending tons of time next to the greens supporting her dad.
‘A passion and love for the sport ignited and grew within me,’ said Smith.
‘So, at the beginning of last year I decided to take up the sport.’
Smith started by competing in fun competitions called Two Bowls Trips and practiced every day for 30 minutes to an hour perfecting her game.
She then progressed to competing in her first Zululand competition a month later.
‘It was very interesting and challenging, but the experience I gained was extremely valuable.’
Shortly after that competition she joined the Empangeni Bowling Club and started competing every Saturday and Wednesday during the school holidays.
Smith then played in the Zululand Singles Tournament in August and the Zululand Mixed Fours competition in eShowe later in the year.
‘Even though I did not do all that well, it was still fun to meet new people and learn from the more experienced campaigners.’
The bubbly youngster attended the KZN trials in February in Dundee, where she impressed and gained selection for the Bloemfontein tournament.
‘I enjoy having to read the green speeds and love the challenge of getting your bowl next to the jack.’
Smith also plays cricket, hockey, volleyball, soccer and doing athletics.
She made the King Cetshwayo cricket team last year as a batsman/bowler, is currently in the high school’s first cricket team, represented the Heuwelland first hockey and soccer teams last year at Heuwelland, and is currently a member of the U14 A hockey team.
The fun-loving teen can be found reading, listening to music or keeping up with the latest trends on all social media platforms in her spare time.
