UMlalazi scoops top national award
UMLALAZI Municipality was recently announced the second greenest rural municipality and awarded R2.5-million during the
8th annual Greenest Municipality Competition in Durban.
The announcement was done by Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs, Barbara Thomson at a special ceremony at the Southern Sun Elangeni Hotel.
It was selected, after being evaluated by the Department of Environmental Affairs, to represent the province of KZN earlier this year, and received the accolade after being recognised for waste management, energy efficiency and conservation as well as water management, landscaping, tree planting and public participation arrangements.
According to the municipality the funds received will be reserved to ensure infrastructure development, protection of the environment through waste management and implementation of Green Economy related projects.
Mayor Cllr Thelumoya Zulu, alongside Director Community Services, Bongani Sithole and
Senior Manager, Futhi Buthelezi accepted the cheque on behalf of the municipality.
