UMLALAZI Mu­nic­i­pal­ity was re­cently an­nounced the sec­ond green­est ru­ral mu­nic­i­pal­ity and awarded R2.5-mil­lion dur­ing the

8th an­nual Green­est Mu­nic­i­pal­ity Com­pe­ti­tion in Dur­ban.

The an­nounce­ment was done by Deputy Min­is­ter of En­vi­ron­men­tal Af­fairs, Bar­bara Thom­son at a spe­cial cer­e­mony at the South­ern Sun Elan­geni Ho­tel.

It was se­lected, af­ter be­ing eval­u­ated by the Depart­ment of En­vi­ron­men­tal Af­fairs, to rep­re­sent the prov­ince of KZN ear­lier this year, and re­ceived the ac­co­lade af­ter be­ing recog­nised for waste man­age­ment, en­ergy ef­fi­ciency and con­ser­va­tion as well as wa­ter man­age­ment, land­scap­ing, tree plant­ing and pub­lic par­tic­i­pa­tion ar­range­ments.

Ac­cord­ing to the mu­nic­i­pal­ity the funds re­ceived will be re­served to en­sure in­fra­struc­ture de­vel­op­ment, pro­tec­tion of the en­vi­ron­ment through waste man­age­ment and im­ple­men­ta­tion of Green Econ­omy re­lated projects.
