Zululand Observer - Monday - - ZO SPORT - Richard Springorum

THE Zululand Sub Union rugby squad coached by Empangeni’s Charles Mndaweni got their season off to a winning start, after beating South KZN 48-40 in a beamer of a game played in the Eastern Cape last weekend.

‘The game was high paced in the first half and we took an early 22-10 lead going into the half time break,’ said Mndaweni.

‘The start of the second half saw the boys take their feet off the pedal and South KZN dominated us in all aspects for the first 20 minutes.

‘With 10 minutes to go, we were trailing 40-28.

‘But the boys picked up the pace and cohesion clicked. With putting phases together and building momentum we managed to steal the game 48-40.’

Men of the Match awards went to flyhalf Hennie Janse van Rensburg and flanker Du Toit Visser.

The squad, which is captained by Richards Bay Rugby Club’s Derrick Ehlers, has players from eShowe, Empangeni, Richards

Bay, Hluhluwe and Pongola Rugby Clubs representing the Sub Union.

The next assignment for Mndaweni and his troops is to participate in a tournament at Woodburn Stadium in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday, 15 September.

‘We will play against DRSU, South KZN and Midlands Rugby Union.

‘I would like to thank our sponsor Bayete Zulu Game Reserve for getting on board this season.

‘We will be playing other fixtures as soon as the KZNRU confirm them.’
