Lightning victims laid to rest
FOUR members of the Mngomezulu family, who were struck dead by lightning in Mdedefana Reserve at Ingwavuma recently, were laid to rest last Thursday.
The deceased included eight-month pregnant, Nelisiwe Mathenjwa (36), Grade 1 learner Siceluxolo Mngomezulu (10), Grade R learner Asimbonge Mngomezulu (3), and Grade 3 learner Owethu Mngomezulu (12).
They died in their one-room house when it caught fire after lightning struck.
A neighbour, who is also related to the Mngomezulu family, Zodwa Simelane said the funeral was sad and tearful and went smoothly.
‘On Wednesday we had the memorial service of Siceluxolo and Owethu at Mceleni Primary School where the two were schooling,’ said Simelane.
The fifth victim, who was rushed to the hospital after the incident, Sibongile Mngomezulu (15) said they lost everything in the fire.
‘I am only left with my father and we don’t have any clothes to wear,’ she said.
Sibongile did not want to speak too much about what happened on Wednesday night except that she saw a lightning flash coming through the window and then the home caught fire.
Jozini Local Municipality spokesman, Nhlosenhle Ndlovu said they have installed lightning conductors in the area to ensure that this kind of incident does not occur in future.
