Po­lice in­ves­ti­gate Bay drown­ings

RICHARDS Bay po­lice have opened two in­quest dock­ets to in­ves­ti­gate two sep­a­rate drown­ing in­ci­dents last week­end.

In the first in­ci­dent, an 18-month-old tod­dler drowned in a res­i­den­tial swim­ming pool at a home in Ar­bore­tum.

Ac­cord­ing to Net­care 911’s Shawn Herbst, the child was found float­ing in the swim­ming pool by a fam­ily mem­ber.

Paramedics were called to the scene and full Ad­vanced Life Sup­port re­sus­ci­ta­tion was ini­ti­ated, but the child did not re­spond and was de­clared de­ceased.

In the sec­ond in­ci­dent, a 47-year-old man drowned at the Bay Hall area.

NSRI Sta­tion 19 duty crew were alerted by Transnet Na­tional Ports Author­ity.

NSRI res­cue swim­mers, SAPS, SAPS search and res­cue and ICE Med­i­cal Ser­vices re­sponded.

Ac­cord­ing to NSRI duty coxswain Nor­man Raut­en­bach, mem­bers of the pub­lic had re­cov­ered the body which was found float­ing in the wa­ter.

Paramedics de­clared the man de­ceased on the scene and the body taken to the Foren­sic Pathol­ogy Ser­vices.
