White elephants surround us

Zululand Observer - Weekender - - ZO LETTERS -

AFTER living in Richards Bay for many years, I have seen the following ‘white elephants’ at massive cost to the rate payers and with no regard to the money being spent.

The sports stadium: a recent ZO story highlights the state of the building that is cracked and leaking water.

If you think back we were promised all sorts of events that would benefit from this stadium, as building costs escalated out of control.

The art centre opposite the stadium: this still-unoccupied and incomplete building set the ratepayers back a pretty penny, without any progress or completion being seen in the immediate future.

Problems have been reported with foundation failure and more ....

Mayoral residence: this reported development has all the earmarks to follow in the money pit of the useless buildings being commissioned by the council.

If there is money available to build a fully finished and furnished mayoral house, including a fire pit (swimming pool), surely the rate payers should be told about this and not have it hidden in council approvals from years past?

If there was cash budgeted in 2015/2016, has it not been lost as it was not used?

All this is going on while we read weekly about roads full of potholes and a decline in municipal services.

I have also seen a story that council owes Eskom millions for electricity that we have paid for, usually in advance with the pre paid meter system.

Why not just tell us, the rate payers, up front the plans and the state of municipal finances?
