Negligence sees millions of litres of water wasted

THE City of uMhlathuze has a ‘save water’ campaign in place, urging community members to utilise water wisely - but millions of litres have gone down the drain owing to the negligence of municipal employees.

This claim was made by community members at Udondolo Reserve, near Matshana in Ward 24.

Resident, Tholumuzi Sikhakhane said two weeks ago workers ruptured a pipe while they were digging a trench to develop new water infrastructure in the area.

‘After realising the damage they had done, they simply abandoned their work and water is still gushing out now.

‘We were hoping they would return on the next day to repair the damaged pipe, but they did not.

‘Water is flowing down into the bush, and I think they thought no one would notice, as it is on the outskirts of our location.

‘We phoned water department to come and fix the broken pipe but nothing has happened.

‘We are now confused. We don’t know what to do,’ he said on Wednesday.

City Communications Manager, Mdu Nacalene undertook to send plumbers to repair the broken pipe.
