Six suspected rhino poachers arrested
PONGOLA police have arrested six suspects believed to be rhino poachers in one of the town’s guesthouses on Monday morning.
Police quickly launched an operation after receiving a tip-off.
The suspects stayed in the guesthouse where they allegedly planned their operation.
Zululand Police Cluster spokesperson, Captain Nkosie Gwala, said when the police arrived they spotted two vehicles fitting the description given to them by the source.
‘Police discovered a CZ 550 Magnum hunting rifle with the serial number filed off, ammunition, two hunting knives, an axe and a silencer in the vehicles,’ she said.
The arrested suspects, between the ages of 34 and 53, appeared in the Pongola Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
‘One female and a Zimbabwe citizen are among the suspects, who were remanded in police custody for further investigation.
‘They are expected to appear at the same court on Thursday (today), facing charges of being in possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition,’ said Gwala.
