ANC Women’s League mourns min­is­ter’s death

THE ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) in the Musa Dladla Re­gion has de­scribed the pass­ing of Min­is­ter of En­vi­ron­men­tal Af­fairs, Edna Molewa, as a great loss to the na­tion.

Molewa (61) died in a Pre­to­ria hospi­tal last Satur­day af­ter she fell ill while on an of­fi­cial trip to China ear­lier last month.

ANCWL re­gional spokesper­son, Pinky Cele, said as part of hon­our­ing Molewa, ‘who was a fear­less fighter against crimes com­mit­ted against the en­vi­ron­ment and pro­tected species’, they will en­gage in var­i­ous ac­tiv­i­ties in the re­gion.

‘We will miss her in­struc­tive guid­ance on pol­i­tics, so­cio-eco­nom­ics, African val­ues, en­vi­ron­men­tal mat­ters and con­ser­va­tion.

‘She was ac­tive in the Mass Demo­cratic Move­ment for more than four decades and was a leader in a trade union move­ment, civil so­ci­ety and in the ANC.

‘In her hon­our we will cham­pion the fight waged by women for equal­ity, safety and jobs. We will con­duct en­vi­ron­men­tal aware­ness cam­paigns and start a process of nam­ing one of our new branches in her name,’ Cele said.

‘She may be gone, but in our hearts and minds she will for­ever be with us.’ Molewa also pre­vi­ously served as North West premier in 2004, mak­ing her the first fe­male premier of the prov­ince.
