A YOUNG girl who was regularly raped by her grandfather was finally avenged when her rapist was sentenced to life in prison at eSikhawini Regional Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
During the court case it was revealed the 53-year-old grandfather started sexually assaulting the young victim in their home at Inyembe Reserve outside Port Durnford area in July 2014.
The perpetrator took advantage of her when they were left alone while her grandmother was at work.
The young victim was only 12 years old when the ordeal started.
Through her testimony, the young victim said the old man had threatened to kill her and her brother if she reported the incident to anyone.
The series of abuse continued until 2017, when the victim reported the matter to her teacher.
A case of rape was reported and opened at eSikhawini SAPS.
The docket was then transferred to Empangeni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for further investigation.
After a thorough investigation by the FCS Unit the grandfather was arrested and charged accordingly.
His bail application was denied and he made several court appearances while still in police custody.
‘It is hoped this harsh sentence will send a clear message to other rapists as well as highlight the concern that our children are harmed by those closest to them,’ said KZN police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane.
