The story of ‘Mad Mike’ brought alive

THE guest speaker at this month’s eShowe His­tory Club meet­ing is Chris Hoare, son of ‘Mad Mike Hoare’.

The pre­sen­ta­tion will be at 6.30pm on Fri­day 12 Oc­to­ber in the Adams Out­post Restau­rant, Fort Nongqayi Mu­seum Vil­lage, eShowe.

Chris Hoare is the el­dest son of ‘Mad Mike’ and was born in Lon­don, grew up in Westville and went to school at Michael­house.

He has a Bach­e­lor’s de­gree from the Univer­sity of Na­tal.

His ‘gap year’ in Europe con­tin­ued for 10 years and in­cluded a host of mi­nor ad­ven­tures in Eng­land and Europe.

He then set­tled into a ca­reer in jour­nal­ism of dif­fer­ent kinds in Dur­ban, in­clud­ing pub­lic re­la­tions, pho­tog­ra­phy and desk­top pub­lish­ing.

He is mar­ried to Terry and has two 20-some­thing-year-old young­sters.

With unique ac­cess to Mike Hoare and his story, it took Chris about 12 years, work­ing be­tween times, to re­search and write a biog­ra­phy on his fa­ther’s life.

It be­came his pas­sion. He has now rein­vented him­self as book pub­lisher.

Chris will in­tro­duce his re­cently pub­lished biog­ra­phy of his fa­ther.

Pa­per­back copies will be avail­able for sale at R350 or a lim­ited hard­cover edi­tion signed by both Mike and Chris at R700.
