Top bowls battles expected at weekend
THE Empangeni Bowling Club will be the venue when both the men’s and women’s Zululand senior singles is played on Saturday and Sunday.
Although there is a small entry of only seven women, which is somewhat disappointing, it must be said that most of the top senior singles players will be on show and the bowls should be well worth watching.
Both defending champion, Yvonne Steenkamp, and last year’s runner-up, Anita Scott, have entered and it would be something of a surprise if these two were not to meet in the final.
Some of the other contestants may take issue with me on that prediction, but time alone will tell.
Likewise, in the men’s section where last year’s champion Barry Mutlow and runner-up Billy Kruse are once again in the mix.
Recently, Mutlow has shown signs that he may be ready for the taking, but he is a wily old fox with loads of experience and will not give up his title without a fight.
Kruse, on the other hand, has been playing excellent bowls of late and will be hoping that he is able to go one step further than last year.
Both Mutlow and Kruse, however, will be looking anxiously over their shoulder where the likes of Mike Bowman, Danie Schoeman and one or two others will be planning the demise of the champions.
The talent in the field makes me hesitate to stick my neck out, but I feel that Mutlow should be the man to beat with Bowman to run close.
