Suspected cop shooter arrested
AN extensive investigation into last month’s shooting of an off-duty Mtubatuba police officer has borne fruit.
The investigation led police officers to Shikshela area in KwaMsane where the suspect was found hiding.
Sabelo Mkhwanazi (30) was found in possession of an unlicensed 9mm pistol and ammunition, as well as four cell phones.
He appeared at KwaMsane Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday for possession of an unlicensed firearm and suspected stolen property.
Mkhwanazi was remanded in custody and the case was remanded to Monday for bail application.
Yesterday (Wednesday) he was due to appear at Mtubatuba Magistrate’s Court on charges of attempted murder and common robbery.
At the time of going to print, the docket had not returned from court.
On 29 September, an off-duty police officer was in Mtubatuba CBD when he noticed a man robbing a woman of her belongings.
The police officer fought the suspect who managed to flee the scene.
He gave chase and the suspect opened fire, wounding the policeman in the abdomen.
He was taken to hospital for medical attention and a case of attempted murder was opened at Mtubatuba SAPS.
