Estepona recognised for work with foreign residents
NEWS Staff Reporter ESTEPONA'S Foreigners’ Department has been recognised by the European programme Participation Matters, for its work to promote the participation of foreign residents in local affairs, said town hall officials last week.
The Participation Matters scheme is aimed at fostering the inclusion and participation of foreign-resident EU citizens in the civic and political life of the member state where they are living.
The Estepona department was invited to participate in an event in Madrid to share its work and experience with representatives of other towns and associations in Spain, Italy and Austria.
The Foreigners’ Department, which provides its services in eight different languages, helps foreign residents with all kinds of documentation and transactions with the town hall, and with processes such as establishing residency, obtaining seniors’ discount cards or enrolling children in school.
It also has a Facebook page (Dpto Residentes Extranjeros Estepona) and a weekly email people can sign up for to receive information on local cultural events and municipal workshops and classes.
Further, the department holds occasional meetings with foreign-resident groups to hear their suggestions and provide them information about town hall affairs, and also collaborates with volunteer interpreters at the heath centre and with the Social Services Department.
The Foreigners’ Department is located at the Tourism Office in Plaza de las Flores and is open from 9am to 3pm Monday to Friday, and can also be contacted by phone (952 809 031) or email (residentesextranje email@example.com).
