Estepona recog­nised for work with for­eign res­i­dents

NEWS Staff Reporter ESTEPONA'S For­eign­ers’ Depart­ment has been recog­nised by the Euro­pean pro­gramme Par­tic­i­pa­tion Mat­ters, for its work to pro­mote the par­tic­i­pa­tion of for­eign res­i­dents in lo­cal af­fairs, said town hall of­fi­cials last week.

The Par­tic­i­pa­tion Mat­ters scheme is aimed at fos­ter­ing the in­clu­sion and par­tic­i­pa­tion of for­eign-res­i­dent EU cit­i­zens in the civic and po­lit­i­cal life of the mem­ber state where they are liv­ing.

The Estepona depart­ment was in­vited to par­tic­i­pate in an event in Madrid to share its work and ex­pe­ri­ence with rep­re­sen­ta­tives of other towns and as­so­ci­a­tions in Spain, Italy and Aus­tria.

The For­eign­ers’ Depart­ment, which pro­vides its ser­vices in eight dif­fer­ent lan­guages, helps for­eign res­i­dents with all kinds of doc­u­men­ta­tion and trans­ac­tions with the town hall, and with pro­cesses such as es­tab­lish­ing res­i­dency, ob­tain­ing se­niors’ dis­count cards or en­rolling chil­dren in school.

It also has a Face­book page (Dpto Res­i­dentes Ex­tran­jeros Estepona) and a weekly email peo­ple can sign up for to re­ceive in­for­ma­tion on lo­cal cul­tural events and mu­nic­i­pal work­shops and classes.

Fur­ther, the depart­ment holds oc­ca­sional meet­ings with for­eign-res­i­dent groups to hear their sug­ges­tions and pro­vide them in­for­ma­tion about town hall af­fairs, and also col­lab­o­rates with vol­un­teer in­ter­preters at the heath cen­tre and with the So­cial Ser­vices Depart­ment.
