A Partido Popular member of the regional parliament in Castilla y León has resigned, citing “personal reasons”, after she had a minor car accident and was found to be at triple the legal limit for alcohol. It is the second time Rosa Valdeón has tested positive for alcohol following a traffic accident. Following the first incident, in 2016, she had stepped down as vicepresident of the regional parliament but remained as a regional MP.
Four people were jailed for between four-and-a-half and six-and-a-half years by Spain’s Supreme Court on Monday, for their roles in a plot to buy a kidney from a Moroccan beggar for €6,000. The court found that one of the jailed men needed a transplant, and the four planned to reduce the waiting time by finding a match and paying him to pretend to be a willing donor. He later backed out before signing paperwork, and three of the arrested insulted and attacked him.
Ancient coins, rings and vases were just part of a haul of 748 Roman, Greek and Iberian pieces recovered by the Guardia Civil this week. Six people, who plundered archeological sites, have been arrested in the province of Jaén after a six-month operation. Other items retrieved were two Roman lead plates, dated between 1BC and 3BC and another plate from the same era which could be one of the first to be discovered with Iberian writing on it.
Spending by foreign tourists in Andalucía jumped by 14.7% in the first nine months of this year compared to the same period of 2016, according to a survey by the National Statistics Institute (INE). From January to September foreign visitors to the region spent a total of €10.2 billion. Spain-wide, the boost was slightly smaller, with spending up 13.9%, to a total of €69.9 billion.
The Mercadona supermarket group has usurped Sevillabased engineering company Abengoa as Andalucía’s top employer. Mercadona employs 17,259 people in the region, compared to Abengoa’s 16,237, according to the third Andalucían employment ranking, recently published in the Andalucía Económica magazine. The other companies in the top five are El Corte Inglés, supermarket chain Covirán and telecommunications and engineering company Ezentis.
