A Par­tido Pop­u­lar mem­ber of the re­gional par­lia­ment in Castilla y León has re­signed, cit­ing “per­sonal rea­sons”, af­ter she had a mi­nor car ac­ci­dent and was found to be at triple the le­gal limit for al­co­hol. It is the se­cond time Rosa Valdeón has tested pos­i­tive for al­co­hol fol­low­ing a traf­fic ac­ci­dent. Fol­low­ing the first in­ci­dent, in 2016, she had stepped down as vi­cepres­i­dent of the re­gional par­lia­ment but re­mained as a re­gional MP.


Four peo­ple were jailed for be­tween four-and-a-half and six-and-a-half years by Spain’s Supreme Court on Mon­day, for their roles in a plot to buy a kid­ney from a Moroc­can beg­gar for €6,000. The court found that one of the jailed men needed a trans­plant, and the four planned to re­duce the wait­ing time by find­ing a match and pay­ing him to pre­tend to be a will­ing donor. He later backed out be­fore sign­ing pa­per­work, and three of the ar­rested in­sulted and at­tacked him.


An­cient coins, rings and vases were just part of a haul of 748 Ro­man, Greek and Ibe­rian pieces re­cov­ered by the Guardia Civil this week. Six peo­ple, who plun­dered arche­o­log­i­cal sites, have been ar­rested in the prov­ince of Jaén af­ter a six-month op­er­a­tion. Other items re­trieved were two Ro­man lead plates, dated be­tween 1BC and 3BC and an­other plate from the same era which could be one of the first to be dis­cov­ered with Ibe­rian writ­ing on it.


Spend­ing by for­eign tourists in An­dalucía jumped by 14.7% in the first nine months of this year com­pared to the same pe­riod of 2016, ac­cord­ing to a sur­vey by the Na­tional Statis­tics In­sti­tute (INE). From Jan­uary to Septem­ber for­eign vis­i­tors to the re­gion spent a to­tal of €10.2 bil­lion. Spain-wide, the boost was slightly smaller, with spend­ing up 13.9%, to a to­tal of €69.9 bil­lion.


The Mer­cadona su­per­mar­ket group has usurped Sevil­l­abased engi­neer­ing com­pany Aben­goa as An­dalucía’s top em­ployer. Mer­cadona em­ploys 17,259 peo­ple in the re­gion, com­pared to Aben­goa’s 16,237, ac­cord­ing to the third An­dalucían em­ploy­ment rank­ing, re­cently pub­lished in the An­dalucía Económica mag­a­zine. The other com­pa­nies in the top five are El Corte In­glés, su­per­mar­ket chain Covirán and telecom­mu­ni­ca­tions and engi­neer­ing com­pany Ezen­tis.
