Those taking part were encouraged to develop their communication skills and channel and hone their emotional development through the medium of the arts.

Another of the objectives was to encourage self-esteem, reduce stress and increase one’s creativity.

The head of the course was art therapist Victoria Wilkinson, who throughout October worked with the group of OAPs from Mojacar.

Local councillor Ana García who oversaw the course stressed the importance of looking after the elderly, more so with an ageing population. In Mojacar, almost 30 per cent of the population is aged 65, according to official figures from 2016, while the national average stands at 18.4 per cent.

In Mojacar, there are classes aimed at the elderly, including gym courses to maintain physical fitness, as well as manual workshops and more.
