70 cats freed
VOLUNTEERS from Valencia animal rescue shelter Modepran this week discovered 70 cats trapped in a 40 square-metre basement in the regional capital.
The find came after a neighbour complained to the town hall about bad smells emanating from the enclosure.
It has not transpired whether the owner of the room where the animals were trapped has been reported to the authorities due to the unhealthy conditions in which they were kept.
Following the discovery, Modepran's installations in Benimàmet have become critically overcrowded and forced the association to request urgent help for adoptions.
In addition, a bank account number has been published on their Facebook site - Modepran Valencia - for donations to buy medicine and food for the cats.
The shelter regularly receives animals that have been abandoned by residents living nearby, as euthanasia of cats and dogs is prohibited in Valencia.
