A 29-year-old Belgian woman was gored by a bull in Moraira whilst standing behind the official restraining barriers during the early hours of Tuesday.

As the second running of the Bous a la Mar got under way, the woman, who was standing behind the barrier, tried to touch the bull's head.

The animal turned and trapped its horns in the bars, goring the woman in the left thigh and throwing her in the air.

This happened just after 01.00 and the lady was taken to Denia hospital and rushed into emergency surgery.

As the tear was clean, the damage was less than had first been suspected, and she was kept in overnight for further observation.

Due to the incident, the rest of the bull-running events were cancelled.

Fiesta organisers regretted the incident and issued a warning to visitors. Members of the public are not always aware of the dangers, even in what are regarded as safe zones.
