Anti-bull protest in Jávea fiestas
Animal-lovers have staged a protest in Jávea against bullruns to coincide with the port fiestas.
The group No Queremos Bous a la Mar ni Bous al Carrer en Ningún Pueblo ('We don't want 'bulls in the sea' or street bull-running in any town') wants to see an end to what they consider an act of cruelty for public entertainment.
Jávea has already axed the ' bous embolats', or bullrunning with flaming rags tied to the animals' horns, and 'bous encaixonats', where they are placed in a small arena for the public to torment them.
But the ' bous a la mar', where loose bulls in a portside ring are hassled by spectators to get them to jump into the sea, as well as bullrunning, continue to feature heavily in Jávea's festivals.
This is expected to be the case with the Virgen del Loreto patron saint fiestas in the port district early next month.
The demonstration will last an hour, starting at 19.30 on Sunday, September 3 on Avenida Jaime I.
