Costa Blanca News (North Edition) - - FRONT PAGE - By Nuria Pérez

OBSTACLES will block off the main access points to local street markets following a meeting between local security councillors and the representative of the national government in Alicante.

The government has called for the measures in the wake of the terrorist attacks in Cataluña in August in which vehicles were used to mow down pedestrians.

A spokesman for the government’s office said it is a general security measure to prevent similar incidents.

He noted that the instruction was given to the councillors during an emergency meeting in Bigastro in the southern Costa Blanca, with similar sessions planned with representatives from all town halls in Alicante province.

The spokesman added that all popular events such as processions, parades, patron saint fiestas and sporting and religious events will be protected in the same way.

He stressed that some councils have already launched initiatives of their own.

The government spokesman in Alicante explained that additional meetings in all towns and cities in the province will be held during the coming months, starting today (Friday), to draw specific security plans for each town.

The aim is to design specific security plans for each town, taking into account its fiestas and major events.

They will also agree on locations where obstacles - mobile or fixed - should be installed and where surveillance and additional protection measures should be launched.

The first meetings will be held in main cities and towns, including Alicante, Elche, Orihuela, Torrevieja, Benidorm, Elda, Petrer, Villena and Alcoy amongst others.

The plans should be in force before the spring, when most popular events and fiestas start.

Nevertheless, local security boards always meet before popular events are held in order to plan a specific security and emergency plan.
