Finestrat mayor Juan Francisco Pérez cuts the ribbon on the local revamped Carrefour store alongside provincial president César Sánchez and company managers yesterday (Thursday). Major improvements have been made to the store that was, in 1989, the first hypermarket to open on the commercial boulevard that now includes many other top brand outlets.

Provincial president César Sánchez and local mayor Juan Francisco Pérez, yesterday (Thursday), cut the ribbon on the recently revamped Carrefour hypermarket on La Cala commercial boulevard.

A few hundred people attended the event along with store manager Francisco Jávier Navas and regional director Amparo Capilla.

The store has never closed for the work, which has been carefully carried out in sections, however the past few months it was inevitable to find a few customers totally confused as to where their favourite products had been temporarily allocated.

But, the wait and patience has been worthwhile as the revamped store is fit for the 21st century.

In his speech, Mayor Pérez thanks Carrefour for being the first company to set up on La Cala industrial estate - now commercial boulevard back in 1989. The arrival of Carrefour marked a turning point for the town, which ceased living under the commercial umbrella of Benidorm to become the resort's main shopping area.

Today there are dozens of top brand stores including Leroy Merlin, Media Markt, El Corte Inglés Outlet, plus top names in La Marina shopping centres, Lidl (cur- rently revamping too) and Mercadona.

With more already setting up (such as Decathlon), the commercial boulevard has become the reference for shopping in the Marina Baja area.

Carrefour Finestrat employs many local workers and provide indirect jobs through suppliers and other companies.

The 'new' store, opened yesterday, includes a sushi counter, a vegetable 'market', a specific eco-product area and a huge bodega - adding to interactive information points that allow customers to find their products throughout the store.

It also has a Wi-Fi area and a mobile phone charging post.
