THE PARENTS of a 15-monthold baby, who was found to have consumed cocaine and marihuana, have been arrested.

Police confirmed to state news agency EFE that a 17year-old woman and 21-year-old man from Elda were detained for abandoning a child and causing injuries.

The police action comes after the young parents took their baby to Alicante general hospital last week.

According to EFE, the child was suffering from an ‘intoxication’ and doctors decided to carry out tests to find the cause of the problem.

These revealed that the baby had swallowed cocaine and marihuana.

This information was passed on to the police and an investigation was launched.

Following several days’ treatment, the child was well enough to be discharged from hospital.

However, the regional government decided that the baby should be taken into the care of social services.

Deputy president of the Valencia region. Mónica Oltra said the child would remain in care while an assessment was carried out of the parents and their home life by social services.

They will then decide whether the baby will be returned to the parents or taken into care on a permanent basis.

Sra Oltra explained that the child’s health is improving ‘but it is important that it has stability while it is recovering’.

A police spokesman said the parents have been charged and released until their case is dealt with by the courts.
