Near disaster averted

ONLY last week it was reported that a man was killed by a window falling from a luxury block of flats in central London – a situation that very nearly occurred in the heart of Benidorm on Saturday night had it not been for the quick actions of a Protección Civil officer.

Members of the public were alerted by the shouts of a women on the third floor of an apartment block on Avenida Martinez Alejos, at the junction of Calle Gambo where the Moors and Christians parade was about to take place. It appears she was trying to open it to watch the parade but the hinges broke, leaving it hanging on by a single window stay, leaving her holding onto the frame.

The Protección Civil, who were on duty for the parade quickly evacuated the area underneath and called the fire brigade. However, as many roads were closed to traffic to make way for the parade, one of the officers, José ran up and tore the window frame from the remaining stay and guided it inside – so averting a crash. Job well done.
