SPAIN'S most fa­mous fe­male opera singer Mon­ser­rat Ca­ballé, died in hos­pi­tal on Satur­day evening due to com­pli­ca­tions in a long ill­ness at the age of 85..

Ca­ballé, who has been placed on par with opera singers Maria Cal­las, Joan Suther­land and Re­nata Te­baldi, was also fa­mous for singing 'Barcelona' along­side Freddy Mer­cury in the open­ing cer­e­mony of the 1992 Olympic Games
