Active cases down – hospitalisations up

Valencia health service chiefs remain on top of pandemic while other regions in Spain are suffering

THE NUMBER of active cases of Covid-19 in the Valencia region stood at 5,368 on Wednesday – down from 5,569 on Tuesday last week.

The improvement over the last eight days bucks the national trend in Spain, with the regional government in Cataluña having to close bars and restaurants, in and Madrid under state of emergency regulations ( see page 22).

However, the number of people being treated in hospital with coronavirus in the Valencia region has risen over the last eight days – up from 424 to 531.

Of these, 55 are in beds in Castellón province, 183 in Alicante ( up by 60 on last week) and 293 in Valencia province.

The number of patients being treated on intensive care wards has also gone up – from 64 to 78.

A total of 32 people have died of Covid19 in the last eight days, with the death toll now reaching 1,706 for the Valencia region.

Councillor for health Ana Barceló reported a number of new outbreaks on Wednesday. The largest of these numbered 24 cases in Cox.

All are residents of the municipality and members of the same family, mayor Antonio Bernabéu told radio station Cadena Ser.

He explained that the public health service had told him the family has many relatives but assured that the situation is under control and residents should remain calm.

Outbreaks were also reported in Alicante province in Pilar de La Horadada ( eight cases – social origin); Torrevieja ( four – workplace); Orihuela ( seven – social origin); and Alcoy ( seven – workplace).

Town figures

Active cases remain high in Elche with the figure rising by nine over the last eight days to 359.

While Torrevieja continues its improvement ( down from 57 to 46), Orihuela has registered an increase ( up from 99 to 116).

Rojales remains low with just six cases.

Cases in the Marina Alta are plummeting with little more than one per town on average, but new ‘ positives’ continue to be found.

One new diagnosis occurred in each of Beniarbeig and Pego, as well as in Ondara and Calpe – now up to four each, while in Benissa two new positives were detected.

The situation remains unchanged in El Ràfol d'Almúnia, with two cases, and in Els Poblets and Sagra, with one each.

Cases have halved in Pedreguer ( from two to one), Jávea ( from 12 to five) and Dénia ( from 27 down to 10), whilst Teulada’s and Gata de Gorgos’ eight each from last week have now shrunk to two and three respectively.

Everywhere else in the district is now virusfree, and seven out of 31 villages have escaped it altogether – Benigembla, the Vall d'Ebo, Llíber, Murla, Senija, Tormos

and the Vall de Gallinera.

La Safor’s Covid19 cases are shrinking fast, but a cluster of outbreaks has caused concern. Benifairó de la Valldigna had escaped altogether until this week, when four positives were detected, all of whom are members of the same family.

Another four in Rafelcofer brings the total there to six, and Oliva is now the worstaffected in the district.

Its numbers have been climbing steadily for the last four weeks, from 14 up to 33, and the reasons for this are unclear.

Gandia has made the best progress once again, almost halving its cases from last week’s 49 down to 26.
