A Portrait of Spain
General Franco’s early years
It was during the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera that Francisco Franco rose through the military ranks to become Spain’s youngest general at the age of 33. He was renowned for his ruthless leadership and military skills, especially in the Moroccan campaigns. Franco was born in El Ferrol in Galicia in the north west of Spain in 1892 into a family with a strong naval tradition. His father was a naval officer who drank heavily, gambled and was a womaniser with an overbearing personality who was extremely strict in the home. His mother on the other hand was conventional, religious and reserved. Franco followed in the footsteps of his mother in his austerity, religious discipline and abstemiousness.
Franco’s childhood was not happy and he was a victim of bullying on account of his short stature and highpitched voice. He entered a military academy at the age of 14 and excelled as an assiduous student with exceptional skills as a military strategist. He arrived in Melilla, North Africa in 1912 and won his first military award after one year of service. In 1920 he joined MillánAstray as a founding member of the Spanish Legion and it was during these early military years he claimed to have formed his vision of a great, unified Spain, especially after the devastating Spanish defeat of Annual in Morocco in 1921. He married Carmen Polo in Oviedo in 1923 and in 1924 he was involved in a scheme to overthrow Primo de Rivera in a military coup, but eventually withdrew from the plot, deciding to obey military orders.
