By Jack Troughton Tony Creasey’s passion for painting flourished after his retirement to Spain and the chance to create colourful pictures.

As a youngster his dreams of going to an art college were replaced by a career in engineering with British Aerospace; his father had stressed the importance of having a career.

Tony and his wife Josie made their home in the Orba Valley which gave him the opportunity to take up art and despite ongoing health problems he is able to pursue his love of painting.

Last weekend more than 50 of his original works were on show at the Denia Marriott Hotel in a two-day exhibition in aid of Javeabased charity Todos Juntos.

A preview took place on Friday evening, a cava re- ception sponsored by Hamiltons; it was Tony’s second exhibition – an earlier show at the El Cid Restaurant was in aid of the Royal British Legion.

“We decided to push the boat out and use a bigger venue; the way the pictures are laid out is phenomenal; it really shows them off at their best,” he said.

He is inspired by flamenco, tango and jazz, but also Spain itself and her culture. He said the Spanish impressionist Joaquín Sorolla and the modern Argentinean painter Fabian Perez.

“We have met Fabian and bought one of his prints – we couldn’t afford an original – and I said I had copied some of his paintings; he wrote on the back of the print ‘for inspiration’,” added Tony.

He admitted he was “frustrated” at starting watercolour classes but was recommended Costa Blanca artist Marc Meyer as a tutor and has never looked back.

Now working mainly in charcoal and acrylic, Tony said: “That was seven years ago and I have never looked back. I now see colours, he has taught me everything – I am now working in a lot more colour.

“He is not only a very good artist but also an excellent teacher; I still go to lessons, Marc is a catalyst and keeps me painting which I very much enjoy doing.” Tony, who also paints life studies and portraits, also creates hand-finished prints and cards, and will accept commissions.
