Bid to keep river clean
A PROPOSAL to keep the River Vinalopó clean in Elche has been discussed by the municipal environment committee.
Environment councillor Antonio García said the network of drains in the city centre has several outlets which can carry floating objects into the river when there is heavy rain. He said objects that end up on the banks in the channelled urban section of the Vinalopó can be cleaned without too much difficulty, but the ones that become trapped in the riverbank vegetation downriver are impossible to remove without uprooting this plant life.
The problem has resulted in complaints from the public. The idea is to create barriers by planting reeds downriver that will block the passage of floating objects and create areas where they are easier to remove. These would be installed from the Puente de Barrachina away from the city centre.
The project has been presented to the River Júcar basin water authority for authorisation.
