Smelly suitcases arouse suspicion
By Alex Watkins A MAN has been caught trying to fly to the Netherlands from Alicante-Elche airport with two suitcases full of marijuana.
The Guardia Civil informed that the 48-year-old Spanish suspect must have thought he would not be discovered because he was flying within the EU so there was no customs control.
But the Guardia Civil fiscal analysis and investigation office (ODAIFI) still carries out routine risk analysis checks on EU flights, and inspected the hold of this plane bound for Eindhoven.
They noticed the distinctive smell of marijuana from two cases and from their tickets were able to identify the passenger, who was already sat on board ready for take-off.
He was taken away with his baggage, which when opened was found to contain 24 plastic packages with a total of 27.32 kilos of marijuana inside, which could have a street value of €40,000.
The suspect was arrested and handed over to a court in Elche, which ordered him to be remanded in custody.
