Tribute to skateboard hero

Costa Blanca News (South Edition) - - Social Scene -

By Alex Watkins IGNACIO Echeverría, who used his skateboard to defend a woman from being stabbed by terrorists during the London Bridge attack in June 2017 in which he was ultimately killed, has had a plaque unveiled in his honour at the Carlos III skateboard park in Cartagena.

This tribute was unanimously agreed by the full council at the end of that month and was finally inaugurated on Saturday to coincide with the celebration of Urban Fest – which brought together lovers of urban art, culture and sports, such as skateboarding.

At the time the council noted that eight people were killed but while everybody’s instinct was to run away, the 39year-old lawyer ran to help with the only weapon he had. In contrast to his own bravery, the post mortem found he had been stabbed in the back.

Mayoress Ana Belén Castejón explained and praised Echeverría’s valiant actions, which led to him being dubbed the ‘skateboard hero’ by the press and turned him into an example and an icon for fellow aficionados.

She also mentioned the special bond he had with the spirit of rebellion, solidarity and companionship that is shared by the community of Contact 96 571 66 79.
