Come climb with me
By Alex Watkins THE MUNICIPAL climbing wall in Albatera has been renovated and reopened.
The facility had been closed down due to deficiencies but was redesigned by the local mountaineering club with funding from the town hall, explained sports councillor Juan Manuel Cánovas. Club president Javier Quinto said they had worked on it all summer.
He explained they have created a ‘boulder’ or low climbing area for beginners, made it more versatile with many different possibilities, and put a lot of emphasis on safety with new holds and all the equipment has been replaced.
“We are excited to have made a climbing wall that is suitable for everyone, from young children up to people who have some experience of climbing,” he said.
For insurance purposes, to use the wall it is necessary either to have a Spanish mountaineering federation (FEDME) membership card, or simply join the local mountaineering club.
The club is now working on a new project to set up a climbing wall in the area at the end of La Algüeda hiking route.
