Elche shows its Mid­dle Age spread

By Barry Wright THE ELCHE me­dieval fes­ti­val re­turns from Oc­to­ber 25-Novem­ber 1.

In a change from pre­vi­ous years, the event will no longer be based around Santa María basil­ica but at the Paseo de la Estación and in the vicin­ity of the Al­tamira palace.

This is the 23rd edi­tion of the fes­ti­val and, in ad­di­tion to the me­dieval mar­ket, fea­tures a to­tal of 12 the­atre, mu­sic, and dance shows at dif­fer­ent lo­ca­tions through­out the city.

High­lights in­clude a per­for­mance by the ac­claimed ac­tor Rafael Ál­varez ‘El Brujo’, who will be per­form­ing a work based on the life of San Juan de la Cruz (John of the Cross), plus the­atre com­pa­nies from Castilla-León, An­dalucía, Va­len­cia and Elche it­self.

There will also be three per­for­mances of the litur­gi­cal Mys­tery play of Elche, de­clared by UNESCO to be a Mas­ter­piece of the Oral and In­tan­gi­ble Her­itage of Hu­man­ity..

The fes­ti­val will also host the 23rd cler­gy­men and min­strels con­test.

20.30: Trovadores y juglares (trav­el­ling mu­si­cians and min­strels): tra­di­tional oral ro­mance sto­ries by Gabrial Calvo at La Llotja cul­ture cen­tre.
