Gibraltar ciggy hauls
NEWS Staff Reporter POLICE and HM Customs officers in Gibraltar seized two cigarette shipments on consecutive nights last week, though in both cases the suspects got away.
At 4am on Wednesday, a Royal Gibraltar Police vessel chased two rigid-hulled inflatable boats that were loaded with tobacco and heading from the Rock’s Eastern Beach to the Spanish coastline, said officials. The engine on one of the boats stalled as the suspects fled, but the other boat swooped in and picked up the two crew members, and escaped into Spanish waters.
The abandoned and swamped boat was recovered and seized, along with a total of six boxes of American Legend cigarettes, some of which had fallen overboard.
Just a day later, in the early hours of Thursday, HM Customs officers aided by a Royal Gibraltar Police marine crew forced a rigid-hulled inflatable boat ashore, but its two occupants “abandoned the vessel and cigarettes and made good their escape,” said HM Customs officials. Officers seized the boat and 10 cases of cigarettes.
